Seattle’s Head Tax

The Socialist City Council of Seattle passed a $275 per employee head tax today. The tax itself will only be collected from businesses grossing $20m initially, though I expect that to be thrown out quickly as it violates Washington laws stating that any and all taxes must be applied equally across any taxed type of entity or activity or property.

The Council knows this and has already written the needed provisions into the law as follows: “Beginning January 1, 2021, a business payroll tax is hereby levied upon and shall be collected from every person for the act or privilege of engaging in business activities within the City.”

Personally I suspect the council will be forced to move that date up or abandon the law altogether once the courts are involved, possibly as early as next week?
